Juniors: Queanbeyan 10 July Carnival Report

Owing to school holidays and limited available spots, only our U10’s made it to the Queanbeyan Junior Roos carnival last weekend. Significant thanks to the hosts, for what was reported as a fantastic day (and we appreciate how hard carnivals are to run!). Our U10 girls and boys enjoyed all of their games, but we received particularly positive feedback for the Woden Weston Rams Juniors Blue team. The Rams demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and camaraderie, with some great chats and fun had after the games. Well done to the Rams and a great performance by our U10’s as shown in the carnival report below:

If ever there was an occasion where everyone in the team deserved a Coach’s award then last Sunday clearly demonstrated that to be the case for our brilliant U10s who played their hearts out during three enthralling games at last Sunday’s Roos Carnival at Freebody Oval.

With only ten players available – and therefore a player down at the start of each match – our young Tigers still managed to run in fifteen tries in three games, winning against the Tuggeranong South Reds and Woden Valley Rams and only narrowly losing against the Roos in our last game.  Much more than this, it was the way in which each and every player worked for each other with great tackling, sensational running, passing and offloads which was most exciting and rewarding.  Here are some of the highlights:

Tuggeranong South Reds Win 20-16

Although Souths were first on the scoreboard, the Tigers were quick to respond thanks to a darting run from dummy half by Max. A few minutes later Logan broke the Reds’ line with a weaving run to put the Tigers in front. However, the Reds were just as quick to respond and at the halftime break scores were level 8-8. The teams continued to go try for try in the second half. Toby’s battling run breaking through the opposition line was fantastic, with three defenders trying to hold him up he still managed to cross the line for his first Tigers’ try. Similar charging runs from both Kieran and Logan were rewarded with them both scoring meant the U10s ran out 20-16 winners.

Woden Valley Rams Win 20-16

Jakobi was first to cross the line in response to the Rams’ opening try, as the Tigers’ spread the ball wide and he managed to squeeze through in the left corner. In another see-sawing game, Rhys ran the length of the field to put the Tigers in front only to see the Rams equalise so again we had a 8-8 score at halftime. With renewed energy, the Tigers were relentless in their efforts as a team in attack and defence. Kieran was next on the scoreboard with another darting and weaving run before Rhys steam rollered his way through to score. Damon also charging through and crossing the line meant we finished 20-16 up.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos Lost 20-28

It was always going to be difficult against the home team but our youngsters rose magnificently to the challenge in their third game and without the benefit of any interchanges which all three oppositions had enjoyed. Although the Roos scored first, the Tigers were always in the contest, Kieran’s thrusting run and Damon again breaking through the opposition defence meant we were only down 12-8 at half time. Our players managed to step up a gear for the final period and two runs to the corner saw Max score twice and Kieran also complete another double. At the end of the game we just missed out 7 tries to five.

In summary we scored some great tries and the fabulous all round effort saw our team only just missing out on the final.

Special mention must be made of the great spirit shown by our players in each of the matches and through their interaction with other players between games, notably the Woden Valley Rams, which drew favourable comment from opposing teams’ representatives, their supporters as well as the neutrals at the Carnival.

A huge thank you to Mums, Dads, families and friends who turned out to support our brave U10 battlers. Your encouragement and enthusiasm throughout the day was brilliant!

Go the Tigers!
