Juniors: Round 3 Match Report

A wet week for the games, but was great to see the kids out having some fun playing footy.

On a cold wet Sunday the Tigers U8 Black travelled to Freebody oval in Qbn to play the Kangaroos. We were short on players and the Roos were accomodating enough to lend us one so we had even numbers on the field. The game was tight early with both teams trading tries. Our boys played with more width this week with the ball and thanks to some great service from Geordie and Harry at dummy half and Aiden and Murray at first receiver our runners were finding lots of space to run in. This resulted in Christian scoring his first try of his career with plenty more to come I’m sure. Hugh played his usual strong game but found few opportunities coming up against his old side for the first time and who made it clear they weren’t going to make it easy on him, but still managed to collect this weeks tackler of the week trophy. Ollie played by far his best game of the year so far leading from the front in both attack and defence collecting our player of the week award as well as a try. Well done Ollie keep up the good work. Unfortunately the weather played its part on the day as well as missing training on Thursday as both teams struggled to hang onto the ball for much of the second half. But a good time was had by all the boys. Tries were scored this week by Christian and Ollie, goals were kicked by Geordie and Hugh. Great work boys. We have photos on Thursday at 440 so training will be limited again, before a home game against the Knights on Sunday. See you all then.- Trevor W. (Coach)

What was a wet start to the day for playing football, was a great day for the U8 Orange 3rd Round Match against Queanbeyan United U8 Black.

The team was led out by Nathan as captain with United kicking off to start the game. With a great bang the Tigers were off and the first points were scored by Nelson with the first try of the day. The team continued to lead the charge throughout the match forcing errors against United with knock-ons and getting the ball back their way to continue attack. Whilst the team were down a player (only 6 on the field) the mighty Tigers took control of the match and successfully scored a total of 12 tries against United’s 2. Amazing speed saw Nathan take 3 tries, Nelson 3 and Lucas 1 ……but outstepping the opposition during the game, the try scorer of the day was Kobe with a total of 5 tries!!!

Of course with many tries on the scoreboard, the boys grew in confidence and everyone was having a go at tackling, Christian and Blake were getting in and ensuring United were stopped in their tracks and as a team the boys made sure that United didn’t get past the wall of orange and black! Tackler of the Week went to Nelson with 14 tackles and the Man of the Match went to Nathan who was the best all-rounder on the day!

Although it was a gloomy and overcast, with the occasional shower at Mick Sherd Oval this week, the weather certainly didn’t dampen the energies and enthusiasm of our young Tigers against the North Canberra Bears. The game was played with fantastic temperament and full credit to both sides for upholding the spirit of the game, and respecting the Referee and officials.
The first half saw some good hit ups and runs by the Tigers, as well as strong tackling and good communication in passing & handling the ball out wide. It was Lachlan’s darting run down the right which saw, the team’s contribution rewarded, as he went over in the corner to get our first points on the board, which Lachlan duly converted. Fine handling, impressive teamwork and support also saw Lachlan cross the line again, with Kieran adding the extra points this time. The Bears were equally up to the challenge and their three tries, and successful conversions, interspersed with ours, saw there was very little difference at half time with the Tigers trailing by just a converted try.
It was great to see the Tigers get off to a flying start at the beginning of the second half, and maintain the momentum throughout. Working tremendously hard as a unit, and displaying great grit and determination, we moved quickly up in the line to keep the Bears at bay, being first to any loose ball, and making some great yardage. While the Bears managed to continue to score, and kicked well in converting their tries, the Tigers remained very much in touch and up to the task, with Bowen diving into the right corner, to keep it a close contest, with Charlie unlucky not to convert the try at his first attempt.
As we rotated our players through the bench, the level of commitment and energy remained consistently high and the Tigers can be justifiably proud, noting we only went down 30-16, as a result of a converted try just before the final whistle!
A big shout out to Lachlan, Max and Toby for their tremendous efforts. Huge congratulations in particular to Bowen who stood out for his all-round efforts and scoring a great try, and this week richly deserves the Coach and Manager’s award.
Also a huge shout to families and friends who ignored the weather, and provided rousing support and encouragement to our players – we look forward to seeing you again next Sunday.
Families don’t forget photos this Thursday – the U11s slot is at 5.30pm post training – pre-ordering on line, beforehand, is the only to way to go as per previous emails. Please make sure our youngsters wear their shorts, socks, and boots and Sue will have the shirts ready for everyone.
Go the Tigers!
