It was great to see a larger number of teams from Bungendore head to the Goulburn carnival on 27 & 28 March and that they all had a great time. Sadly, we couldn’t get all our teams in this year, but will keep trying to get access to other carnival opportunities. The carnival reports are below courtesy of the team’s managers and/or coaches:

U7 Orange

Hi and welcome back to the Tigers U7 Orange players and parents. Last Saturday we travelled to Goulburn for their carnival to kick off our season, and thankfully we didn’t arrive to similar conditions as last year. With one new face for the carnival in Bailey and Liam on loan from U7 Black we travelled with 8 fit and ready little Tigers. We took on the South Tuggeranong Knights in the opening game and despite clearly giving way a height and weight advantage the boys held their own against a much bigger opposition. It was good to see the boys had listened at training and were making plenty of good tackles around the legs with Liam leading the charge and Kobe making some good solid contact on much bigger opposition. When we had the ball however a few of the boys forgot to remember that we need to stay inside the sidelines, but we got better as the game went on. Next we took on the Goulburn C side who were a little smaller but made up for that in speed with some of our quicker boys having to do some chasing and making some great tackles from behind and in cover. When we had the ball it was time for our bigger boys to make some meters with Lucas, Jay and Nelson all contributing with some nice long carries and well supported by our dummy half’s getting used to our system and being ready at the play the ball. In our last game for the day we took on Goulburn’s B team. This looked like it was going to be an even match up and was very entertaining to watch with our boys really starting to find their rhythm at the play the ball with Blake coming into his own scoring two great tries and being unlucky not to score a third. Baily settled in well by now also making some good runs down the edges, and then came the moment of the match. Attacking deep in their half Patty called for the ball and set off with determination in his eyes, only for one of the Goulburn defenders to collect him with a lazy arm right above the shoulders, the crowd took a collective breath waiting to see what happened next, and Pat as a brave Tiger would took a deep breath got a drink from the trainer and ran back on to finish the game with the rest of the team!!! Following the last game there was a presentation for player of the day which went to Liam for his consistent efforts in attack and defense all day. Well done Liam. Boys you all played fantastic for our first hit out of the year and I think we are in for a great season enjoy your Easter break and I will see you all at training after the holidays.

U9 Black

Under 9’s Black made the journey to a sunny Goulburn to dusty off their footy skills. Owen made his footy debut and was impressive with some great runs, tackles and even a try. Other debuts included Coach Brett who only scored a few extra grey hairs and League safe Chrystal who encountered all things Rugby League over the course of the day. A big thank you to the staff at GBH looking after Ryan after his first run resulted in a broken arm. Highlights of the day included; Henrys relentless tackling, Billy’s grubber kick, Logan’s speed out of dummy half and Will’s determination when versing his rivals the Knights.

U10s Junior Tigers Unbeaten at Goulburn Carnival but denied Semi-Finals game on count-back!

With a number of new faces having joined the Junior Tigers during the off-season, the new look U10s ran out with a real sense of purpose for their first game against North Canberra Bears at the Goulburn Carnival last Saturday.

Against a backdrop of glorious sunshine and a pristine oval, it wasn’t long before a dazzling run from our 1st receiver saw 4 points on the board quickly followed by a solo run which saw us going into the break 8-4 ahead. A score line which was matched during the second half as our youngsters got used to playing with each other for the first time and running out 16-8 winners.

An hour’s break between games was particularly helpful as our second game saw us up against the Stockman’s ‘A’ team. We certainly weren’t overawed by the opposition, who play in a higher league, indeed having conceded the first try, the Junior Tigers managed to run in three of their own and went into half time slightly ahead 12-8. A further five tries between the teams, concluded a really exciting 20-20 draw with everyone tackling hard, and working for each other.

Our final game in the ‘Round Robin’ saw us up against the Stockman’s ‘B’ team, in another enthralling game. Playing uphill in the first half, and the wind against us, the locals went into the half time break with a comfortable 12-4 lead. However, the Junior Tigers weren’t finished by any means and their enthusiasm and willingness to play for each other reaped rich reward scoring four tries to two, resulting in would you believe another 20-20 draw.

After checking in with the scorers it seemed that our undefeated youngsters were destined for a semi-finals berth only to be pipped at the post, on count back, with the Valley Dragons having a better points difference.

However, this didn’t take anything away from the enjoyment and spirit of our young stalwarts who having had only eleven players throughout the day, had to play all three games without inter-changes, yet everyone, including our four new starters played their hearts out.

It was also fabulous to welcome so many family and friends, old and new, at the start of the season and with Coach Jerry at the helm we look well placed for the games ahead after Easter.

Go you Tigers!!!!

U12

U12s boys came in ready to play. 110% effort was put in from all players. Whilst there are some new players to the team, the boys were working well as a team in defence. As their first couple of games as a team, they unfortunately were unsuccessful in the first two rounds. Triumph came in the third and final game with a nail biting 4-3 win. The day was enjoyed by all and thanks to everyone for participating. Great effort!

U14

On Sunday the 28th of March, the Bungendore U/14s took part in a carnival at Goulburn North Oval. They played games against three teams – The Goulburn Stockmen, Young and the Woden Rams. The boys played with heart and improved with each game. Josh stole the ball in the first game against The Stockmen and gained substantial metres. Unfortunately Blake was taken off the field in the first game with a hand injury, but made some great runs prior to that.

In the game against Young, Hayden and Matthew performed advantageous hit-ups and Dilan was tackling left, right and centre. Tremaine and Jackson supported their team mates by chasing down the opposing team when they made a breakthrough.

When playing the Rams, Stevie made some impressive runs. Locklen B. and Tyler pushed the Rams back carrying a few of the players with them. Showing no fear and diving headfirst into tackles was how Lachlan M. and Billy brought down opposing players. Frankie, Zachary, Lochlan A. and Harper performed notable hit-ups, gaining valuable metres for the team. Dilan and Cooper T. made breakthroughs, each scoring a try in the last game against Woden bringing the score to 12-8 in favour of the Rams.

Jack was outstanding in motivating the team and encouraging them to keep pushing hard, leading by example at all times. Although Cooper M. and Izayah couldn’t take part in the day, it was wonderful to see them on the sidelines supporting their team mates. As games progressed, communication improved and working as part of a team became front and foremost to the boys. Well done Bungendore U/14s!

A big thank you to our coaches Brett and Jason, and Huddy our trainer. Your dedication to this team thus far has been fantastic.
