Juniors: Round 1 Match Report

Great to see most of our players getting their first run of the season. Welcome to all of our new and returning families. Match reports are prepared by the team’s Coach or Manager and are added as the become available.

Munchkins commences Sunday 15 May.

Well on the first day in history footy has been played in sunshine at Gowrie since ever, the mighty U8 Tigers Black kicked off the footy season. The boys were pumped and ready and led out by our captain Harry. The Dragons kicked off and from the kick off the boys hit the front with Jay scoring a great individual try. It was our turn to tackle after that and the boys played like they had waited all off season to get their shoulders dirty with Aiden and Liam making some great solid contact. Our new teammates Geordie and Christian got in on the act soon after and were very impressive in their first games of Rugby League. With the effort in defence the boys kicked out to a great early lead through the first 2/4. All the boys settled in great to the new 2 pass rule and and FR bib. Late in the game Hugh and Ollie were great to kept us in it with some outstanding attack and defence, however with only 8 players and unfortunately losing Christian to a tough head knock the boys weren’t able to keep a good Dragons side at bay but will take valuable experience from today into next weeks game. Try scorers today were Hugh 3, Jay 1, Ollie 2 and Liam 1, with Jay and Geordie kicking 1 goal each. Our award winners were Geordie taking out the Tackler of the Week with a solid 11 tackles in his first game of footy, well done Geordie. Player of the Week (thanks to Jess D’Arcy this weeks selector) went to Jay but anyone of the boys could have won it after watching a great team effort. Rest up boys and we will see you at training on Tuesday.

Game 1 – Orange Under 10s – The final score was Sharks 32 to 6 Tigers.

The weather was great for our first game of the season.

Although we didn’t win this week, our team worked really well together for the first game, with a larger field, longer runs and some new rules to learn. It was a terrific effort by the players.

Harvey P. played his first game for the Tigers, it is great to have him on the team.

There were some good chip kicks throughout the game.

This week the Parents Award went to Owen E. for his defensive work.

John P. received the Coaches Award for his terrific effort through the entire game.

Overall, a great start to the season and Coach Chem was really pleased with how our team came together this week.

U11s Junior Tigers Bright Start to the Season against West Belconnen

What a fabulous start to the season with the U11s Junior Tigers running out in glorious sunshine at Mick Sherd Oval last Sunday, cheered on by families and friends throughout and enjoying an entertaining home win!

The pre game preparation certainly paid off with some excellent tackling and hitups, as well as ever improving ball handling skills shown by the Tigers throughout the game.

In an entertaining first half the two teams exchanged tries early on, and the game continued to veer between ourselves and West Belconnen. However, thanks to two dazzling tries from Lachlan and a powering run by Kieran, together with conversions by Lachlan and Dan, the Tigers went into the half time break 16-10 ahead.

With huge encouragement from the sideline, our young guns continued where they left off in the second half with Toby completing some powerful runs up the middle, shrugging off tackles on the way, as well as Kiri making a great effort and gaining good yardage. Running hard and working well for each other as well as spreading the ball out wide, the team run in three more excellent tries -Another from Lachlan converted by Logan, as well as Max and Rhys converting their own splendid efforts.

The enjoyment shown by all the players, new and old, throughout the game was great to see and with the help of Coach Jerry at training, and on game day, we’re sure our youngsters will have a great season and continue from strength to strength. As always with a fantastic all round effort it is difficult to single out individuals however Toby’s consistent great efforts in tackling and hit ups, and Kiri’s hard work deservedly place them as this week’s award winners.

Although the weather is getting cooler and damper, having your support on the touchline is invaluable, so please continue to turn out to cheer our youngsters on and witness some great footy.

Go you Tigers!!!!
