Bungendore picnic BBQ (15 March) for local volunteer fire fighters

Thankyou Picnic Barbeque for our local volunteer fire fighters

A lunchtime BBQ is being planned for Sunday 15 March at 11.30 am in the grounds of St Mary’s Catholic church in Bungendore.  The event is being organised by St Mary’s and St Philip’s (Anglican) churches.

The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for members of the local communities in the wider Bungendore area to meet with and thank the local volunteer fire fighters for their courage and commitment to the protection and preservation of our properties and the adjoining forested areas over the extraordinarily long hot summer which has challenged us all.

The event will take the form of a lunchtime picnic BBQ where local community groups band together to host an RFS family for lunch.  Members of the local community are asked to bring lunch for themselves and drinks and nibbles to share with an RFS volunteer and their families on arrival.

Members of clubs, associations and other community organisations are asked to attend and support the event as hosts.  Host families are asked to bring picnic tables and chairs and/or a blanket.  Guest families (RFS) are also asked to bring their own chairs.  St Mary’s will set up its own chairs and table however its resources are insufficient to provide for the expected attendance and BYO picnic items will ensure everyone gets a seat.

Ushers will be appointed to link RFS guest families to host families as they arrive.  RFS members will wear an item of RFS clothing to identify them as guests.

St Mary’s and St Philips will provide meat, bread and salads for RFS members and their families.  A drink stall will also be available free of charge to RFS members.  Community members are asked to bring their own drinks as alcohol will not be sold on the day.

Bungendore Rotary have kindly offered to do the cooking with traditional steak and sausage sangers on offer.  Other portable BBQs will be positioned in the grounds so host families can cook their own meat should they wish to do so.

St Mary’s Hall will operate as a café with coffee and cakes available.

The BBQ is not a fundraising event and nor is it intended to conduct a prayers service during the BBQ however, prayers of thanks to the volunteers will be offered during the regular Sunday services at St Mary’s (Mass at 8.30) and St Philips Prayerbook service with Holy Communion also at 8:30 .  Members of the community are most welcome to attend these services and offer their own personal prayers on the day.

It is now recognised that PTS trauma is a really significant issue for those that fought at the fire front.  Members of “Picking Up the Peaces” will be in attendance and available to offer help and advice to RFS members and their families.   Picking Up the Peaces” are being supported by the Bungendore Mudchooks Rugby Union Club.

The community is asked to support the event to simply say thanks to the firies for their hot, dangerous and tiring work.  If you are willing to assist or suggest other ways in which we can make the event a memorable experience for the FRS members, please contact David Webster at d.webster45@bigpond.com or 0417 235 492 and watch the St Mary’s Facebook page for more detail. Please come along and make it a memorable day for the firies.
